CHAPTER 9

The next person we met with was January Roberts, who had arrived back at the hotel that morning. Sunny arranged for the four of us to sit down and talk on a quiet part of the patio.

We were already waiting at the table when January Roberts arrived, escorted by a couple of Sunny’s officers. The small blonde was wearing large black shades, and underneath those shades I could tear-streaked eyeliner down her cheeks.

“So?” she asked as she took a seat at the table. She lit a cigarette and blew out smoke, opting to keep her shades on. It wasn’t particularly sunny at the moment and the sky was quite overcast, so she could only be trying to keep her eyes hidden. “What is the nature of this meeting?”

“Where did you go last night?” I asked. “You left the hotel.”

January leaned forward and flicked ash into a glass, taking another drag before she answered. “I was staying with a friend on the mainland.”

“Which friend?” Deacon asked.

“That doesn’t matter,” January replied. “I got back this morning just after nine.”

“How are you holding up?” I queried. “Forgive me if I’m stating the obvious, but it looks like the news has hit you hard.”

January almost looked incredulous at the comment. “Of course, the news has hit me hard. My husband is dead, and at his own hand at that! When I left here last night, I hardly expected that would be the last time I’d see him alive!”

That was reasonable. “I’m assuming Victor talked with you about his last will and testament?” I asked.

“Is that what this meeting is about?” she asked. “Shouldn’t the lawyers be here?”

“This is just an informal conversation,” I clarified, “not a legal proceeding. What did you know about his will?”

“Not much,” she said after a moment of consideration. “He said he would take care of me in the event of his passing. He mentioned I was part of the will—”

“What about all of it?” Deacon interrupted.

January looked rocked by the news. “I beg your pardon?”

“He named you as the sole heir for the entire thing,” Sunny said, stepping into the conversation. “What do you make of that, Mrs. Roberts?”

January sputtered. “I—I don’t know what to say, that is most unexpected.”

“As unexpected as Victor killing himself? You were his wife, you probably knew him better than most, did he express that he felt suicidal?”

“Not at all!” January proclaimed. “He would never!”

“But yet…” Sunny interjected.

“Victor would never kill himself. I don’t care what it looks like, it’s not right!”

“You are correct,” I told her. “It looks like a suicide, but the evidence suggests it was staged.”

“So, this is a murder?” January said, her mouth hanging slightly agape.

I nodded. “That is our suspicion, yes.”

She drew back a little. “Then I am a suspect,” she concluded.

“Why would you say that?” Deacon asked.

“You found a will declaring me the sole heir of the estate. You doubt the suicide—just as I do, I dare say you’re gunning to have me in the gallows before
